Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)
Anxiety can manifest in a variety of ways, and it can be different for everyone. However, some of the most common signs of anxiety include:
Excessive worrying: This is often the most common symptom of generalized anxiety disorder. The worrying associated with anxiety disorders is disproportionate to the events that trigger it and typically occurs in response to normal, everyday situations.
Feeling agitated: When someone is feeling anxious, part of their sympathetic nervous system goes into overdrive. This kicks off a cascade of effects throughout the body, such as a racing pulse, sweaty palms, shaky hands, and dry mouth.
Restlessness: Restlessness is often a common symptom of anxiety, especially in children and teenagers.
Fatigue: Becoming easily fatigued is another potential symptom of generalized anxiety disorder. This symptom can be surprising to some, as anxiety is commonly associated with hyperactivity or arousal.
Difficulty concentrating: Some people may experience difficulty concentrating with anxiety. Others may find that their mind goes blank.
Irritability: People with anxiety disorders may feel irritable. This symptom can be particularly problematic in people with anxiety disorders who are also in close relationships with others.
Tense muscles: Muscle tension is closely linked to anxiety. While it can occur in isolation, it is often accompanied by other anxiety symptoms.
Trouble sleeping: Problems falling asleep or staying asleep is associated with a wide range of health conditions, both physical and psychological, and of course, it's not uncommon in people with anxiety disorders.
Panic attacks: These are characterized by a sudden onset of intense fear or discomfort that reaches a peak within minutes. Symptoms can include palpitations, sweating, shaking, shortness of breath, a feeling of choking, and fear of dying or losing control.
Avoiding social situations: In some cases, anxiety can become so overwhelming that individuals will avoid everyday situations that trigger their anxiety.
It's important to note that everyone experiences anxiety differently. If you or someone you know is experiencing these symptoms and it's causing significant distress, it's important to seek help from a healthcare professional. They can provide a proper diagnosis and discuss treatment options.
